A historic partnering agreement between the Bradfield Development Authority (BDA) and Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council (GLALC) will see Australia’s first new city in 100 years continue to be informed by and support the advancement of First Nations peoples.

The agreement reflects a shared commitment to reconciliation, truth-telling, respect for Aboriginal heritage, and inclusive development, establishing a formal framework for operational and cultural cooperation in the development of Bradfield City.

Under the agreement, the organisations will work together to improve opportunities for First Nations people in Western Sydney, including through employment, education and training at the Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF) and across Bradfield City’s development.

Development of Bradfield City will continue to be undertaken with Traditional Custodians, Elders, and First Nations knowledge holders, ensuring the city is connected to Country and holds cultural significance for all, alongside the BDA’s work with the GLALC.

The agreement includes collaboration on cultural events and proceedings in Bradfield City, with a focus on ensuring First Nations communities are central to the city’s creation.  Future cultural initiatives under the agreement may include a Keeping Place for artefacts at a culturally appropriate site agreed by both parties, a community and cultural transport program, as well as an ambitious Indigenous ranger program on these ancestral lands.

To commemorate the signing, an exhibition of artworks from GLALC will be proudly displayed in Bradfield’s First Building, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Alongside enduring work with Traditional Custodians and local First Nations communities, the agreement with GLALC is part of the Authority’s strong commitment to make Bradfield a place where industry, education, and First Nations communities come together to build a stronger future.

“This partnering agreement formalises a strong relationship that has been growing steadily over nearly 5 years now,” said Ken Morrison, CEO of Bradfield Development Authority.

“It’s built on trust, shared values, and a vision for Bradfield that honours the enduring connection to Country and creates opportunities for First Nations communities.

“We’re proud to be working alongside Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council to ensure Bradfield is a place of cultural significance, economic opportunity, and community pride.”

Dr Melissa Williams, CEO of Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council said: “We are very pleased to see a growing interest and pride in our heritage and culture, throughout the community we span.  This has led to a better understanding and appreciation of what we all share, and it is developing a desire for working together for mutual benefit, now and into the future.

“The signing of a partnering agreement with the Bradfield Development Authority is a wonderful example of this progress and ensures that First Nations Peoples are active collaborators for the future of this city.

“Together, we are co-creating opportunities for employment, education, culture and eco-tourism that will benefit our Members, broader First Peoples community and future generations to come.”
