Families invited to ‘test drive’ a new community as the streets of Birling become a playground

Street cricket, Sydney Thunder and good old-fashioned neighbourhood play will take over Hazlett Boulevard at Birling this October as part of Camden Active Month.

Camden families are being invited to get outside, get moving and experience a different kind of Sunday afternoon when Play in the Streets of Birling comes to Barker on Sunday, October 25 from 12pm to 2pm.

Presented as part of Camden Active Month, the free community event will see a section of Hazlett Boulevard transformed into a place for cricket, play and community connection.

Camden Active Month brings together a calendar of activities designed to provide the Camden community with free opportunities to be physically active.

As part of the initiative, Cameron Brae Group is working with Camden Council and Cricket NSW/Sydney Thunder to bring Play in the Streets of Birling to life, with street cricket activities, wheelie-bin wickets, family entertainment and opportunities for people of all ages to get involved.

And the rules will be familiar to anyone who grew up playing cricket in the backyard or street – one hand, one bounce; over the fence is out; and, of course, six and out.

Birling Project Director Katherine Hurley said the event was an opportunity to encourage families to get active while demonstrating the role streets and public spaces can play in creating connected neighbourhoods.

“Great communities are about much more than the homes we build. They’re about creating places where people can get outside, meet their neighbours and feel part of something,” Ms Hurley said.

“Play in the Streets is a really simple idea – take a street, add some cricket and give people permission to come out and play.

“As Birling starts welcoming its first residents, we’re beginning to see the community we’ve spent years planning become a real neighbourhood. We want people to come and experience that for themselves.”

For those considering a move to the area, Ms Hurley said the afternoon also offered an opportunity to ‘test drive’ the Birling community rather than simply viewing it on a masterplan.

“Buying into a new community is a big decision and it’s difficult to understand what a place will eventually feel like from plans and brochures alone,” she said.

“This is an opportunity to walk the streets, meet people, see homes taking shape and get a taste of the kind of neighbourhood we’re creating.

“You don’t need to live at Birling or be thinking about buying here either. If you’re local and looking for a fun way to get the family moving, we’d love you to come along.”

Sydney Thunder will help bring cricket to the street, with activities planned to encourage children and families to pick up a bat and have a go.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy family entertainment, purchase food from street food vendors, meet the Birling team and talk to participating home builders.

Play in the Streets of Birling will be held from 12pm to 2pm on Sunday, October 25 2026 at Hazlett Boulevard, Birling Community, Barker.

The event is free, with registrations encouraged to assist with planning.
